Beyond Interpreting Agency is excited to serve the DeafBlind Community of Missouri as a Support Service Provider.
This will be called Beyond SSP
For the first time in Missouri's history, Support Services Providers will now be available in a systematic manner for
DeafBlind individuals. Deaf, Inc applauds the efforts of MCDHH, families, friends, stakeholders - and of course, DeafBlind people, themselves - for the tremendous advocacy that resulted in state funding for this greatly needed service.
What does an SSP do?
Support Service Providers (SSP's) are specially trained professionals who enable DeafBlind people who have combined vision and hearing losses to access their environments and make informed decisions. SSP's provide them with visual and environmental information, sighted guide services, and communication accessibility. The SSP may serve in any number of capacities, including assisting with activities of daily living (grocery shopping, mail reading, running errands), access to the environment, sighted-guiding, and community involvement.
SSP's are NOT interpreters. Communication assistance often occurs for short exchanges, but this assistance is limited. The emphasis of SSP work is on visual and environmental (not verbal) information. SSP's do not facilitate communication for important transactions such as the translation of a lease, a medical appointment, or the discussion prior to making a large - purchase; this would require a professional trained interpreter.

Beyond SSP has a transportation policy that SSP's can not transport DeafBlind individuals in their personal vehicles. This could create a liability issue for the SSP, the grantee, and the State of Missouri.
Beyond SSP has a new Program Educators for the MO SSP Program. They are Stephanie Birkhead, Kendra Hart and Jeffrey Wilson.
They have joined forces to discuss Program updates, test transportation, collect feedback, answer questions, and provide general support throughout the year. The Educators are traveling the state to educate the public about what the program has to offer as well as training new SSPs and meeting with Program participants, making calls and sending emails to connect with participants. They are working together as a team to improve the Program this year and for the years to come. Please do not hesitate to contact one of them with your questions or concerns.
